You do not put Shields, Link Amps, Force Amps, or Turrets on a farming portal. Conversely, if your group of portals contains any of those mods it is not a farm.

True for flash farms. Less true for standing farms. In areas with fewer agents such that it takes time to get P8s it makes sense to have both Shields and hack mods.
If a portal or cluster are used primarily for gear on a semi regular basis it is by that definition a farming portal or farm respectively. Farms in some locales require more defensive mods than a single portal can carry and even when combined with the weaponized mods of surrounding portals still is insufficient for protection. Therefor even a portal modded for pain but used to farm gear is most certainly still a farming portal.
